Cecil County Airport is an aviation treasure at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, 3 miles southwest of Elkton, Maryland. It is situated in an historic area where bustling rail, road and river traffic converged to support northeastern U.S. commerce since revolutionary times. The airport adds air access to meet the transportation needs of a rapidly developing, modern business, industrial, recreational and “bedroom” community. Cecil County is rich with historic landmarks, preserved military sites, and restored houses and mansions, having played an important part in America’s growth since 1691. Cecil County Airport provides not only for the recreational flier but it is lengthening and upgrading its lighted, paved runway to accommodate the newest, state-of-the-art business and pleasure aircraft to serve the citizens and businesses well into the future. Three instrument approaches provide for virtually all weather access. Cecil County Airport began in the 1970’s as a modest private strip. The runway was expanded to 2000’ by owner Robert Powell and a group of local businessmen and realigned to its present orientation in the mid-80’s as a grass, public use airport known as Raintree Airpark. It absorbed the operations of the defunct Cecil County Airport, formerly Waldo Lovett’s Field approximately 6 miles northeast on the Elkton Newark Road. In the ‘90’s, the existing Cecil County Airport property was sold and the airport decommissioned. As the only public use airport in the county, Raintree Airpark then formally adopted the Cecil County Airport name. Runway, taxiway paving and expansion to 3000’ and hangar construction began in the late ‘90’s and the flight school and maintenance facilities enlarged. Since the early 2000’s, an Airport Master Plan, developed in conjunction with the Maryland Aviation Administration, has guided the progress and future of the airport. The years 2003 through 2007 saw acquisition of acreage, multiple instrument approaches charted, obstructions removed, and the construction of a large hangar for Cecil Aero Services’ maintenance operation. Though still privately owned, in 2008, the airport was formally recognized by the county as “the” county Airport. The airport is now on a path forward to more safely and efficiently handle existing traffic, the new quiet and efficient very light jets (VLJ’s) and personal light jets (PLJ’s) as well as all conventional piston aircraft, most business class turbo-props and certain light business jets. The proposed Master Plan additional growth includes, in 2009, a new terminal building, continuing hangar construction and the completion of the remaining portion of the full length taxiway as well as the beginning stage of the 1000’ runway extension to a 4000’ length. Future plans include fostering of a range of diverse aviation related businesses, an airport weather observation system (AWOS), growth in the new Sport Pilot training, Light Sport Aircraft sales and service and continuing efforts to address the reasonable and relevant aviation needs of northeastern Maryland.
